2008 Shell Bodo Community Oil Spill Wiki Project
Tim Qian
The 2008 Bodo Oil Spill was two major oil spills in Bodo, Rivers State, Nigeria, with a combined magnitude comparable to the Exxon Valdez spill. The resulting contamination of food and water sources caused severe environmental destruction, decline in public health, and destruction of livelihoods supported by the local fishing and farming economy. Despite the spill's magnitude, there is little visibility and coverage of the spill online. The purpose of this project was to lay the groundwork for other contributors to add on to and ultimately improve visibility. From my experience working on this project, I learned more about the systemic issues in the relationship between the residents of the Niger Delta and oil companies, and how this remains an ongoing and relevant topic in litigation for remediation and cleanup.
