Reflect on past experiences and identify your skills and strengths to find your path forward in geography. Alumni mentorship and career exploration activities help students develop resilience and build community while making connections between college and career.
Learning Goals:
- Understand how the study of geography is beneficial to your academic and professional goals.
- Create meaningful connections with fellow students, alumni, faculty and staff in the Department of Geography.
- Envision a pathway from college to career.
- Identify strategies for accomplishing your goals.
Course Timeline:
Unit 1: What Is a Career?
In this unit, we will start the course by becoming familiar with what is meant by “career,” and approaches to prepare for career possibilities. We will also begin to get to know each other and set up expectations for the rest of the quarter.
Unit 2: What Is Higher Education and Why?
In this unit, we will consider higher education and a college degree in the context of “career.” This unit has a lot of reading about the significance of college, your degree and your major, and how these may (or may not) contribute to your future career. Please try your best to read as much as you can in order to understand how each piece fits together.
Unit 3: Who Am I?
In this unit, we will honor who you are today as a UW student and a person in the world with valuable skills, strengths, interests and experiences.
Unit 4: Who Is My Community?
In this unit, we will consider the Department of Geography as an academic community that includes students, faculty and alumni. What are the assets you bring to this community and how is this community similar or different from other community/ies to which you belong? This is also the time to begin the Networking Project module together with your assigned group. *Thanks very much to Kristi M. Soriano-Noceda, EOP Scholars Instructor, for significant contributions to the activities and framework for this unit.*
Unit 5: What Do I Want?
In this unit, we will radically imagine your future in terms of career but more importantly in terms of the values that you hold and how you hope to stay true to those values (integrity).
Unit 6: Where Do I Go from Here?
In this unit, we will set goals for the coming quarters before graduation, and make a realistic plan for accomplishing them. In this way, we take ownership of our remaining time at UW and make intentional choices about how to engage in future experiences.
