Junior Geography major César García (pictured in foreground) earned a place this summer in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s Congressional Internship Program. This competitive program provides opportunities for highly-qualified Latino undergraduate students to work in a congressional office. César will be working firsthand with a member of Congress on Capitol Hill throughout this eight-week program, as well as taking part in seminars in Civic Engagement, Social Responsibility, and Promoting Community and Hispanic Culture.

In his time at UW thus far, César has been an extremely active member of the campus community, serving as a student ambassador for the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity-Multicultural Outreach and Recruitment (UW OMAD-MOR). His work with OMAD focuses on outreach to high schools in Washington state and recruiting minority and underrepresented students to study at UW. One of the highlights of his work in this area is leading campus tours to middle- and high school students. In the photo, César is conducting a tour of the UW campus. He notes that his interactions with prospective students “helps them physically experience the university and envision themselves as university students one day.” This provides an opportunity for him to share his own background and insights about what it means to be a minority student at UW.
