Andre Ortega, 2012 Ph.D. graduate advised by Professor Withers, was awarded the 2017 Virginia A. Miralao Excellence in Research Award from the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC). Ortega was given the award for his 2016 book Neoliberalizing Spaces in the Philippines: Suburbanization, Transnational Migration, and Dispossession. The PSSC selected Dr. Ortega’s book because of its “innovative take on several national and global contemporaneous events and how all these are unfolding to advance neoliberal tendencies in Philippine development.” Visit here for more details about Dr. Ortega and his work.
