On June 9, 2023, the Department of Geography celebrated over 130 B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. recipients at our annual Convocation Ceremony! Professor Bo Zhao, Undergraduate Program Coordinator, and Professor Suzanne Withers, Graduate Program Coordinator, announced the following honorees who received awards from the department and from other units at UW:

Each year, graduating seniors have the opportunity to nominate an instructor for the Award for Faculty Excellence in Teaching. The recipient of this year’s award is Professor Bo Zhao. Geography majors shared their appreciation for Professor Zhao with their nominations:

  • "Dr. Zhao allowed room for question and error as well as provided great insight into the Geography Data Science Option and why it is important!"
  • "Professor Zhao helped me a great deal in learning about the applications of web programming for GIS. We met during office hours frequently, and he provided guidance and resources that enabled me to create a great web map/and learn a lot about web programming/mapping."
  • "Bo Zhao's classes often pushed me to think critically about ethical and technological concerns. He allowed me the freedom to explore topics that were valuable to me while also giving me more experience with working in a team to achieve and end goal and deliverable."
  • "Professor Zhao provided numerous resources to elevate the learning in his classes."
  • "Professor Zhao made sure that every individual in his class excelled at every project completed. He gave us valuable insights into his research and experiences that really enabled my personal learning."
  • "He incorporated a lot of trending topics in GIS into his teachings which really interested me."
