Autumn 2024

Hello from the Department of Geography! I write to wish you well and share recent news and highlights. As I write this, we are wrapping up a busy autumn quarter on campus and in the department.

We opened the new academic year by welcoming new assistant professors, Dr. Chrystel Oloukoï and Dr. Patricia Lopez, and our incoming cohort of new graduate students. New faculty hiring continues and we are searching now for another assistant professor. At our 6th annual Geographers in Practice panel, we were delighted to learn from the career pathways and reflections of alums now working in construction and permitting, human services, and GIS communications. We invite you to view a recording in the event archive

Research and teaching innovations by geography faculty have been featured in a range of media outlets in recent months. Professor Michael Brown and Professor Emeritus Larry Knopp’s research was in The Seattle Times Pacific NW Magazine, as part of its "Pride around Seattle 2024" collection. Professor Mia Bennett’s collaboration with the Fulbright Arctic Initiative, studying the impact of Arctic militarization on Indigenous communities, was covered in UW News. Professor Gretchen Sneegas’s innovative use of Wikipedia for engaged learning in her undergraduate course, Geographies of Energy and Sustainability, was featured in the Wiki Education Blog.

As friends and alumni, you play a crucial role in supporting these accomplishments. We are so grateful for your gifts, your involvement in department events and programs, and your efforts to champion geography in your professional and personal communities. Please keep in touch as we are always happy to hear from you!

Warm Wishes,

Sarah Elwood-Faustino, Professor and Chair

I first taught with Wikipedia in Winter 2024 as part of my Geographies of Energy and Sustainability class.
