Environment and settlement in the Palouse, 1868-1910

Meinig, D. W. (1950). Environment and settlement in the Palouse, 1868-1910. [University of Washington Libraries].

The term "Palouse country," unlike many other colloquial areal designations, lends itself to fairly definite geographic delineation. In its general position in the Pacific Northwest (Plate I) it lies between the two great north-south trending mountain ranges, the Cascades and the Rockies, and between the two major streams of the region, the Columbia and its largest tributary, the Snake. Politically it lies in two states, Washington and Idaho, and in parts of six counties, Whitman and Spokane in Washington, and Kootenai, Benewah, Latah, and Nez Perce in Idaho (Plate II may be used throughout this study for locations within the region).
